Control & Instrumentation Engineer Location: Barry, South Wales (Relocation considered for candidates with existing UK work authorization) About The Opportunity A leading international manufacturing company is seeking an experienced Control & Instrumentation Engineer to join its engineering team at a major process manufacturing facility in South Wales. This position is primarily focused on Distributed Control Systems (DCS) , with additional responsibility for supporting site Operational Technology (OT) infrastructure and limited local IT support. The IT element represents only a small portion of the role, so candidates with strong controls and automation experience are encouraged to apply even if they have limited IT exposure. The successful candidate will act as the site's technical authority for control systems and OT infrastructure, ensuring safe, reliable, and compliant operation while supporting continuous improvement and capital projects. Key Responsibilities Serve as the technical expert for site control systems, OT infrastructure, and industrial automation. Maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize DCS, PLC, and related automation systems. Implement programming changes using established Management of Change (MOC) procedures. Support Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations for plant performance and reliability issues. Lead and support functional safety initiatives, including Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), SIL, interlocks, and alarm management. Manage OT infrastructure including controllers, I/O, servers, virtualization platforms, historians, gateways, backups, and related systems. Ensure compliance with applicable safety, cybersecurity, and regulatory standards. Support capital projects involving automation and control systems. Act as the liaison between the site and centralized IT services for local IT support and infrastructure issues. Assist with engineering budgets related to automation, OT, and maintenance activities. Support training and knowledge sharing across engineering and operations teams. Required Experience Degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Control, Instrumentation, Electronics, or a related discipline. Strong experience with Emerson DeltaV DCS architecture, configuration, maintenance, and programming. Experience with PLC platforms such as Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or similar. Experience within a process manufacturing environment (chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, refining, food, or similar). Knowledge of functional safety standards (IEC 61511 / IEC 61508) and Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS). Experience with virtualization technologies such as Hyper-V and/or VMware. Understanding of industrial cybersecurity and OT infrastructure. Strong troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement skills. Good knowledge of Microsoft Windows, industrial networks, and manufacturing control systems. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work across multidisciplinary teams. Fluent English.
